Senior Backend Engineer

Volatus Health is a well-funded startup founded by top medical experts in the field of reproductive health along with tech entrepreneurs. We are building a next-generation software platform from the ground up for fertility clinics that will greatly improve outcomes for patients and medical staff.

We are seeking a highly seasoned Senior Backend Engineer with years of experience building and shipping production backends with PostgreSQL to help us take our product from prototype to product launch. You are an advanced backend engineer with strong database skills, experience integrating external APIs, a strong product focus, and you are comfortable thinking on your feet in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment. Experience integrating with medical devices and systems is highly desired. 

You will be responsible for designing and managing  our data model comprising a variety of internal and external medical data. You’ll ensure the database is highly performant, reliable, scalable, and secure. 

Required

• PostgreSQL Mastery: Data modeling, query performance, transactions, triggers, scaling, history

• Authorization: RBAC/ABAC experience required. Row Level Security (RLS) experience is ideal.

• Data Security: Experienced securing data in production environments, via encryption etc.

• API Integration: Advanced experience integrating with external APIs, data mapping, and ETL. 

• AI Integration: Experience programmatically interacting with LLMs or other advanced AI models

• Testing: Advanced database testing experience, security audits, maintaining high reliability

• Programming Languages: TypeScript/Javascript and SQL

• Frameworks: NodeJS and/or NextJS

• Solid CS fundamentals

Strongly Preferred

• Experienced with Supabase (especially Row Level Security and Realtime features)

• DevOps expertise, implementation experience, and uptime reliability

• Medical device integrations (Immunoassay, Ultrasound, etc)

• Medical data (i.e. HL7, FHIR & HIPAA compliance)

• AI Training: Capability to help craft our long term AI strategy, along with training and customizing open source AI models based on medical data

• Voice activation, Speech-to-text, or Text-to-speech experience

• Solid proficiency with React (we’re a NextJS shop; since we’re a small team you may be asked to contribute to the front-end)

You will work closely with a team including our head of engineering, principal engineer, product designer, and CEO to expand our customer story SaaS application. As an early team member, you will make foundational technology decisions and influence key product decisions that ultimately shape our product and company. Our codebase is relatively new, which means you will have the opportunity to build many parts of our application from scratch.

Strongly biased toward action. You are comfortable quickly balancing tradeoffs and making decisions with a mind towards risk mitigation. Enjoy owning problems end-to-end. You can coordinate multiple pieces of a project, across team members and are self-motivated to go and learn any new things needed to make a project successful.

Ideal candidates will be +/- 4 hours Pacific Time, though we’re open to considering applicants outside that timezone if you’re a perfect fit and are willing to work with our primarily US West Coast based timezone.
