What you will do This role will have a strong focus on strategic leadership across actuarial data, actuarial systems, and enterprise technology partnership. You will help define and drive the NF data strategy, guide the evolution of actuarial tools and applications, and influence the future direction of the team’s technology roadmap. You will play a key role in major data platform modernization work, including helping the organization drive technology transformations while partnering with IT and actuarial stakeholders to drive adoption and long-term execution. You will also help shape how the organization thinks about emerging technology, including AI, in support of actuarial analysis, modeling, data, and decision support. This role is not just about technical expertise. It is about setting direction, establishing priorities, leading through others, and helping the team execute at a higher strategic level. You will provide leadership, direction and oversight for the performance of sophisticated actuarial techniques and procedures and risk analysis. In addition, you’ll develop a strategic vision to ensure efficient, consistent and integrated data and analysis. We’ll count on you to set strategy and business recommendations that are crucial to the success of Nationwide and the protection we provide our customers.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: Works with various pricing teams to develop solutions that enhance returns and/or mitigate risk. Support may occur through a variety of means including building/running models, peer reviews, reasonable checks and various types of analysis. Assists with evaluation of a product design to inform business and risk management leadership of the expected profitability and most significant risks associated with new product concepts. Provides expert knowledge of pricing assumption-setting, model building, actuarial analysis, product mechanics and embedded policy owner options, valuation and non-forfeiture law. Provides analysis and development of pricing guidelines, evaluation of profitability targets, risk measures, and other pricing metrics (such as capital usage). Coordinates Product Risk Committee (PRC) meetings, distributes minutes, and is highly involved in writing of decision memos, activity reports and other PRC-related communications. Updates Nationwide Financial Risk Committee on PRC-related activity. Plays an important role in educating and motivating cross functional teams to develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Teams may consist of members from actuarial, finance, systems, legal, accounting policy, investments and/or other areas. Educates risk management leadership on complex product designs, pricing techniques, etc. The role also requires the ability to communicate and influence leadership to expedite the product approval process. Participates in training of less experienced actuaries. Performs investment pool analysis to determine appropriate investment strategies. Involved in determining the framework used modeling and decision making. Advises business unit leaders, investment leaders and risk management on the impact of various strategies. Provides corporate review of reinsurance treaties via quarterly review of Risk Transfer Questionnaires. Performs various analysis (i.e. counter-party analysis) and acts as a central hub for reinsurance questions. May be involved with risk management leadership on innovative reinsurance concepts and redundant reserve transactions. Creates and administers various reports to assist senior management and ensure compliance with various guidelines. Examples include return on total capital report and default rick change analysis. Performs other ad hoc requests. May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Reporting Relationships: Reports to Actuarial Leader. This is typically an individual contributor role. Typical Skills and Experiences: Education: Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or similar background requiring modeling, programming or quantitative analysis. License/Certification/Designation: Achievement of Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries. Has membership in the Society of Actuaries and American Academy of Actuaries. Experience: At least eight years Actuarial experience and Actuarial Council approval. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Demonstrates the highest level of technical actuarial expertise in life insurance product mechanics and embedded options, pricing models, life pricing assumptions, valuation and non-forfeiture laws, tax code 7702, state life insurance regulations. The role will require leadership, influence and communication skills. An ability to bring to bear past actuarial experience to apply to new product concepts and requirements, such as Principles Based Reserves, is required. Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
