Position Overview

The Senior Data Engineer role at arenaflex is a pivotal, full‑time position that focuses on designing, building, and maintaining robust data pipelines that ingest, transform, and deliver high‑volume data from diverse sources. Reporting to the Data Engineering Lead, you will partner with product, analytics, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into reliable, automated data solutions that drive operational efficiency, improve customer insights, and support strategic initiatives across the organization. This role offers a competitive hourly rate of $24 and the flexibility to work remotely from Dallas, USA, or any location that suits your lifestyle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Pipeline Architecture: Design and implement end‑to‑end data pipelines using AWS services (e.g., S3, Redshift, Glue, Lambda) and SQL technologies to ensure seamless extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of large, complex datasets.
  • Automation & Optimization: Identify opportunities to automate manual processes, improve data flow latency, and increase system scalability, resulting in faster time‑to‑insight for business stakeholders.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Work closely with data scientists, product managers, and engineering leads to understand data requirements, provide technical guidance, and deliver solutions that align with strategic goals.
  • Data Quality & Governance: Develop and enforce data quality standards, monitoring frameworks, and governance policies to maintain the integrity and reliability of critical business metrics.
  • Performance Tuning: Optimize SQL queries, data models, and AWS resource configurations to achieve cost‑effective performance at scale.
  • Tool Development: Build reusable data engineering tools and libraries that empower other teams to self‑serve data needs while adhering to best practices.
  • Stakeholder Enablement: Provide technical mentorship and documentation to internal partners, ensuring they can effectively leverage data pipelines for analytics and reporting.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current with emerging data technologies, industry trends, and best practices, and proactively recommend enhancements to arenaflex’s data platform.
  • Ad‑hoc Projects: Contribute to special initiatives, such as data migration, system integrations, and proof‑of‑concept experiments, as directed by senior leadership.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience building data pipelines in cloud environments, preferably AWS.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and relational database design, with a track record of writing performant, maintainable queries.
  • Demonstrated experience with data integration tools (e.g., AWS Glue, Apache Airflow, dbt) and scripting languages such as Python or Scala.
  • Solid understanding of data modeling concepts, including star and snowflake schemas, and experience designing data warehouses or data lakes.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, break them down into actionable components, and communicate solutions clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative mindset and a proactive approach to stakeholder engagement.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in a quantitative discipline.
  • Professional certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty or Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer.
  • Experience with big‑data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Kafka) and real‑time streaming pipelines.
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines for data engineering workloads.
  • Background in the aviation or travel industry, understanding of airline operations, revenue management, or passenger experience analytics.
  • Track record of leading data engineering teams or mentoring junior engineers.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to synthesize large volumes of data, identify patterns, and derive actionable insights.
  • Problem Solving: Skilled at diagnosing root causes of data issues and implementing robust, long‑term fixes.
  • Technical Leadership: Comfortable guiding cross‑functional teams through technical decisions and best‑practice adoption.
