Why This Role Matters

In today’s data‑centric world, the ability to ingest, process, and analyze massive streams of transaction data in real time is a competitive advantage. As a Remote Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will be at the heart of the platform that powers billions of card transactions every day. Your work will directly influence the reliability, scalability, and security of the systems that keep our customers’ financial lives running smoothly. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of financial technology while working from the comfort of your own home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high‑throughput, low‑latency data pipelines that move transaction data from on‑premise systems to cloud‑native environments.
  • Collaborate with software architects, product owners, and data scientists to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Write clean, performant code in Java or Scala, adhering to best practices for readability, testability, and maintainability.
  • Build and optimize NoSQL data stores such as Cassandra and Elasticsearch to support real‑time analytics and fraud detection.
  • Develop proof‑of‑concepts (POCs) to evaluate emerging technologies, including streaming platforms like Apache Kafka and event‑driven architectures.
  • Implement containerized deployments using Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift, ensuring seamless CI/CD pipelines and DevOps automation.
  • Lead technical discussions, mentor junior engineers, and provide architectural guidance across multiple scrum teams.
  • Stay current with industry trends, open‑source projects, and security best practices to continuously improve the data platform.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations and incident response, applying root‑cause analysis to drive long‑term reliability improvements.
  • Document system designs, data flow diagrams, and operational runbooks to foster knowledge sharing within the organization.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience developing large‑scale data processing applications using Java or Scala.
  • Hands‑on experience with distributed data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Flink, Spark) and streaming technologies.
  • Proficiency in NoSQL databases such as Cassandra and Elasticsearch, including data modeling and query optimization.
  • Solid understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and container orchestration tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to write production‑grade code, perform code reviews, and contribute to a shared codebase.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience with Apache Kafka or similar messaging systems for real‑time data ingestion.
  • Background in building microservices and RESTful APIs that expose data services to downstream applications.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, including continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools like Terraform or Ansible.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance standards relevant to financial data (PCI DSS, GDPR, etc.).
  • Track record of mentoring junior engineers and leading technical workshops or brown‑bag sessions.
  • Experience with performance testing, profiling, and tuning of data‑intensive workloads.
  • Understanding of different memory models, garbage collection strategies, and JVM/Scala runtime optimizations.

Core Competencies for Success

  • Problem‑Solving Mindset: Ability to break down complex data challenges into manageable components and devise elegant, scalable solutions.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable working in cross‑functional, distributed teams, sharing knowledge, and building consensus.
  • Innovation: Willingness to experiment with new technologies, accept failure as a learning opportunity, and iterate quickly.
  • Customer Focus: Understanding of how data pipelines impact end‑user experiences, fraud prevention, and business outcomes.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a fast‑moving environment where priorities shift and new requirements emerge regularly.
