Role Overview – Lead DevOps Engineer (Kubernetes & Linux)

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead DevOps Engineer to join our Infrastructure Services Group (ISG) TechOps team on a part‑time, remote basis. In this role, you will own the design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of our core Kubernetes platforms—OpenShift, VMware Tanzu, and Farmer—ensuring they operate at peak performance 24/7. You will act as the go‑to expert for “Kubernetes as a Service,” guiding internal customers through on‑demand cluster provisioning, automation, and lifecycle management. Key Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and maintain highly available Kubernetes clusters on OpenShift, VMware Tanzu, and Farmer, adhering to industry best practices and internal standards.
• Serve as the subject‑matter expert for “Kubernetes as a Service,” providing guidance, troubleshooting, and architectural recommendations to internal development teams.
• Implement and enforce GitOps workflows using ArgoCD, Jenkins, and other CI/CD tools to automate cluster provisioning, configuration drift detection, and day‑2 operations.
• Collaborate with security and compliance teams to embed robust security controls, vulnerability scanning, and disaster‑recovery mechanisms across all platform components.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, including runbooks, architecture diagrams, and service level objectives (SLOs) for platform services.
• Lead incident response for platform‑related outages, performing root‑cause analysis and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
• Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of knowledge sharing through workshops, brown‑bag sessions, and internal tech talks.
• Partner with product engineering groups to streamline the delivery pipeline, ensuring seamless integration of containerized workloads into production environments.

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
• Minimum 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience managing production‑grade Kubernetes clusters, preferably with OpenShift, VMware Tanzu, or Farmer.
• Deep understanding of Linux system administration on both physical and virtual servers, including package management, kernel tuning, and networking.
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, and YAML for automation and configuration management.
• Demonstrated experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, ArgoCD, GitLab CI) and GitOps principles.
• Solid grasp of container runtimes (Docker, containerd) and networking solutions (Calico, Cilium, OVN, NSX‑T).
• Experience implementing security controls (RBAC, network policies, pod security standards) and disaster‑recovery tools (Velero, Restic).
• Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex issues across clusters, namespaces, deployments, and services.
