Position: Advanced Practice Provider-Genetic Counselor(GC) EDS & Hypermobility Disorders Center - No Experience Required This Genetic Counselor joins a dynamic team of providers, who are providing care for individuals with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility disorders. This Genetic Counselor will join a team of at least three (3) physicians, an NP, and support services such as OT, PT, and nutrition. This position has the opportunity to teach trainees and supervise genetic counseling students. The Genetic Counselor will provide genetic education, counseling and psychological support to patients and their family members who may be affected by a variety of connective tissue and hypermobility disorders. They will identify individuals and families at risk, assess risks, interpret information about the disease, analyze inheritance patterns, review testing options, facilitate genetic testing, interpret genetic test results, and review available medical management options for discussion with treating providers. This is primarily an in-person position, working Monday-Friday during business hours. There can be flexibility to work remotely during administrative time. Past experience with hereditary connective tissue disorders; demonstrated proficiency in family-centered counseling and interdisciplinary collaboration; strong analytical and communication skills; and prior experience in academic or tertiary care settings preferred. This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and is eligible for a hybrid schedule of a minimum 3 days on campus per week, with additional on-site presence as needed, in accordance with UVA's remote work guidelines. Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen. 1) Administration

  • Collaborates with providers reviewing EDS referrals and supporting appropriate triage.
  • Complete appropriate documentation of visits, telephone calls, communication with patients and providers, and summary of results and recommendations.

2) Professional

  • Functions as an integral member of the EDS team, maintaining compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrates professional accountability through continuing education, participation in genetics-specific learning opportunities, and collaboration with colleagues.
  • Upholds UVA Health's standards for compassionate, family-centered, and evidence-based care.
  • Contributes to the education of all learners (students, residents, and fellows) and colleagues on genetics-related topics.
  • Completes continuing education in accordance with state guidelines to maintain state licensure and CGC certification.

3) Clinical

  • Provide direct patient care in the EDS & Hypermobility Disorders Center with at least 6 sessions (3 days) of clinic per week.
  • Review pertinent medical records in preparation for clinic visits.
  • Elicit and evaluate family pedigrees, gather additional medical history, and provide a risk assessment.
  • Discuss genetic diagnoses, etiology, inheritance patterns, and risk of occurrence and recurrence in language that is culturally sensitive and appropriate to the patient's level of understanding.
  • Order appropriate genetic testing based on evaluation of medical and family history information.
  • Integrate genetic results with personal and family medical histories in order to assess and communicate risk factors for genetic conditions and diseases.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), or their predecessor, the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG), accredited training program.
