Architectural Historian Manager 2

GAI Consultants, Inc. is looking for a Part-Time Architectural Historian Manager 2 to serve in our Charleston, WV office. This position can be staffed in other GAI locations and the ability to be remote or hybrid. The ideal candidate would be experienced in conducting detailed archival research, architectural and historical resource inventory surveys, preparing architectural inventory forms, determination of effects reporting, treatment plans, developing historic contexts for mitigations, National Register nominations, and public speaking. Duties:

  • Experience and knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 4(f) of the US Department of Transportation Code, National Environmental Policy Act, and Federal Regulatory Energy Commission Cultural Guidelines.
  • Experience navigating power, energy, and renewable projects in the mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest regions.
  • Conduct detailed archival and background research.
  • Conduct architectural and historical field surveys (requiring overnight travel).
  • Prepare architectural inventory forms.
  • Author architectural and historical resources inventory reports.
  • Prepare finding of effect determinations of eligibility reports, treatment plans, and Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic Architectural and Engineering Record documentation.
  • Prepare National Register of Historic Places nominations.
  • Presentations to historic preservation boards, city councils, consulting party meetings, etc. Requirements:
  • A Master’s Degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Must be organized and write concisely and clearly.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and navigate field maps.
  • Expected to make public presentations to historic preservation boards, public meetings, etc.
  • The successful candidate must have a current driver's license. Physical Demands:
  • Please note that this position requires overnight travel so candidates must be willing and open to travel locally on a monthly basis.
  • Most of the survey work will be limited to public roads with some travel to agricultural areas including back roads.
  • GAI provides hotel/lodging, a vehicle, and per diem to cover food costs. General Characteristics
  • Ability to make effective presentations, write articles for publications, required to present at conferences, establish a reputation in the industry as a Cultural Resources Expert, Principal Investigator as needed for projects; well-rounded in aspects of consulting and the industry, excellent writing and organizational skills, and ability to mentor other staff's writing (proposals and reports). Minimum Years Of Experience
  • 15+ Years of Experience Education
  • Master's or Ph.D. in History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or associated degree. Certification/Licensure
  • Driver’s License Technical Responsibilities
  • Advanced understanding of NHPA, NEPA, and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Cultural Resources Guidelines.
  • Understands how to synthesize data and can identify cultural landscapes.
  • Solid understanding of architectural history literature.
  • Fluent in proposal writing (i.e. scope of work, budgets, etc.) and can coordinate with clients and government agencies.
  • GIS knowledge is preferred.
  • Serve as a Principal Investigator and/or Project Manager for projects.
  • Meets or exceeds Department of Interior Standards.
  • Interpreting the strategy of top-level management and translating it into everyday policies.

  • Manage client relationships.
  • Responsible for preparing and monitoring scopes, budgets, and schedules for specific project tasks.
  • Supervision of staff to complete their assigned tasks; maintaining GAI's procedures and protocols.
  • Inspiring and encouraging employees to perform their best.
  • Reporting issues and performance to top-level management.

  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills; interacts with other staff; interact with clients; interacts with Project Managers, Principal Investigators, and various Department Managerial Staff, especially with client communications; interact with clients and regulatory staff.
