We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pathology Assistant to join our team at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), a leading academically-integrated hospital system in Metro Detroit. As a Pathology Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting our Anatomic Pathology department, ensuring the accurate and efficient processing of specimens, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Job Summary

As a Pathology Assistant, you will work under general supervision to perform specific tasks in assigned areas, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing activities. You will assist in training staff, troubleshooting and resolving problems, and utilize specialized semi-technical techniques to handle specimens. Your attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently will be essential to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in training staff on Anatomic Pathology and specimen processing policies and procedures to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Troubleshoot and resolve routine or moderately complex processing and Anatomic Pathology issues
  • Enforce and comply with departmental safety policies and procedures, including OSHA guidelines
  • Prioritize incoming specimens and process patient specimens using specialized techniques
  • Set up and maintain designated work areas and equipment, ensuring operational readiness
  • Collaborate with staff and Pathologists for all Anatomic Pathology processes, including labeling specimens, vials, and slides
  • Generate labels and attach to specimens according to pre-established test requirements
  • Ensure specimen integrity by verifying patient identification
  • Assign accession numbers to all specimens and process according to protocol
  • Prepare specimens for reference labs and record incoming results
  • Perform special processing of selective specimens, such as acid wash, cell block, and decalcification
  • Maintain daily records, including specimen logs, worksheets, and special procedure logs
  • Conduct routine quality control checks on equipment and report unusual findings
  • Prepare solutions and reagents according to pre-established guidelines
  • Perform clerical duties, such as answering the telephone, scheduling, and maintaining records

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in a related field (e.g., medical laboratory technology, pathology assistant)
  • Certification as a Pathology Assistant (e.g., ASCP) or willingness to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • 1-2 years of experience in Anatomic Pathology or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of Anatomic Pathology and specimen processing principles and practices
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Experience with laboratory information systems and software
  • Familiarity with quality control and quality assurance principles
  • Experience working in an academic medical center or large laboratory setting
