Job Summary

We are seeking an exceptional Student Hourly Academic Tutor to join our team at the University of Kansas. This role is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and passionate individual to make a positive impact on students' academic journey. As a Student Hourly Academic Tutor, you will provide personalized support to students in need of extra literacy and numeracy instruction, promoting their confidence and interest in reading and mathematics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring sessions to students in literacy (pre-K through elementary) and numeracy (K through 9th grade) at the Lawrence Public Library.
  • Develop and implement engaging tutoring activities to improve students' fluency, comprehension, and math skills.
  • Work closely with students to set and achieve academic goals, promoting a growth mindset and self-confidence.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians to keep them informed about their child's progress.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance your skills and knowledge in literacy and numeracy instruction.
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment, promoting a love of learning and a sense of community among students.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:

  • Qualify for and accept Federal Work Study to become a tutor.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the Lawrence Public Library.
  • Be enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or be enrolled in summer session or be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester (for summer periods).
  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student (exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
  • Be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours if continuing into the fall semester.

Preferred Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with the following preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with children in schools, camps, or other settings.
  • Interest and passion for working with children in pre-Kindergarten through grade nine.
  • Self-motivation and a desire to go "above and beyond" to promote student learning.
  • Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; attention to details and deadlines.
  • Elementary or Middle/Secondary Education major.
  • Commitment to working through the academic year, with the option to work through the summer.
